Traditional approach
Before the development of interferon beta, there was no treatment for multiple sclerosis. Injections of cortisone could reduce the intensity and duration of relapses, but had no incidence on the development of the disease itself.

Biotech revolutions
Even though there is still no cure for multiple sclerosis, the use of interferon beta, made possible using the techniques of biotechnology, has enabled real progress in the long-term treatment of the disease. It was the first drug which had a real effect on the development of the disease.

Drugs currently available
Two recombinant proteins have been developed, interferon beta 1-a and interferon beta 1-b, with the same properties. The proteins are then introduced into medical preparations put on the market by a number of different pharmaceutical companies.

Number of patients treated
The target population for interferon beta is estimated to be 12,000 to 15,000 people in France.

Future
A new drug, the monoclonal antibody natalizumab, has just been put on the market in the United States. This, and other treatments still under development, will offer additional solutions for the treatment of multiple sclerosis.
